Sam’s Story Sam was born November 8, 2012 happy and healthy (very healthy :)). May 2016 - This picture was taken on the day Sam was admitted to the oncology floor. Superheroes come in all sizes! Sam was so lucky to have a sister who was always ready to play with him while also taking the best care of him. Hard Truth. After being stuck in a hospital room for over a week, all Sam wanted was to look out a window and breath some fresh air. Sam enjoyed playing sports so he could be a part of a team and run around with frineds. Sam loved learning about dinosaurs. Anytime he had the chance, he would visit dinosaur exhibits. Even when he was in the hospital, he could still learn about dinosaurs and play dinosaur video games. Sam loved his nurses!!! They got him through lots of hard times and also lots of giggles. Thanks to helpful organizations, Sam got to pack a ton of fun activities (and snacks!) into his life to help balance all the needle sticks, nausea and fear that came with his diagnosis. Sam knew how to make a mask look good. During his stem cell transplant and various rounds of chemo, Sam's immune system was very weak and exposure to a cold could make Sam very sick and land him in the hospital. During Sam's stem cell transplant he lost a lot of weight, but helping cook in the kitchen, especially sweets, got him excited about food again. Some of the sweetest moments were Sam shinning as a proud big brother. After having to cancel Sam's first Make-A-Wish, because he was so sick in the hospital, we were able to reschedule in November 2019. This was truly a magical trip filled with so many smiles. Sam rode Space Mountain three times!! Siblings truly heal. August 2019, Emmie and I were able to visit Sam and dad in NYC while he was in a trail for treatment. Pizza was one of the first things Sam ate every time he got to New York. It helped create a a fun routine when he had to travel. Best friends can be made though the most unfortunate circumstances. First day of first grade (a week late). Sam was able to travel back and forth from NYC to Dallas and attend school with his friends in between treatment. Sam loved being able to go to school and come home and show us what he learned. LEGOS!!! Need we say more. Legos were always a fun distraction through treatment.
